Kerns Nursery - list of Vegetables 2008
This year we are again offering some new and interesting varieties of herbs and vegetables.  All plants are acceptable to our Mountaintop growing conditions and will make great ingredients to your cooking, canning and freezing for the winter.  Though some are not winter hardy they have a seasonal production that gives worthwhile results.
 
Here's our new, indexed list for 2008, of 58 different vegetables that we offer this year.  We also add a personal commentaries by Pat Kerns.

CABBAGE GONZALAS 66 days Round mini cabbage - dense, early to mature uniform heads that are sweetly spicy. From 4-6" depending on spacing.
CAULIFLOWER EARLY SNOWBALL WHITE - 55 days An extremely early and heat tolerant variety with large pure white solid heads
CAULIFLOWER CHEDDAR GRAFFITI 58 & 54 days WOW! here's something fun to grow! cheddar forms beautiful orange colored heads and graffiti has stunning purple head! all quite delicious!
CELERY CONQUISTADOR 80 days Early widely adapted celery that produces full upright heads packed with crisp flavorful stalks. Performs well under heat and moister stress in soils of average fertility
CHARD (SWISS) BRIGHT LIGHTS MANY BRIGHT COLORS - 60 days Beautiful colored popular Swiss chard - yellow, pink, red - cook or use raw in salads

CUCUMBER BURPEE HYBRID 55 days Good general cucumber for eating, 8' long fruits
CUCUMBER HOMEMADE PICKLES 55 days Developed for the home garden for home pickling. A heavy producer of crisp fruits -harvest when 2-5" long. One plant may yield up to 45 fruits!
CUCUMBER (BURPLESS) SWEET SLICE EARLY-SWEET 65 days Non acid type cucumber- sweet, bitter free and "burp less" -ideal variety for people who have trouble eating normal cucumbers.
EGGPLANT BLACK BELL DARK PURPLE 68 days Disease resistant variety GROWS SLIGHTLY SMALLER, BUT WITH HIGH YIELD. FRIUT IS DEEP GLOSSY PURPLE COLOR
EGGPLANT FAIRY TALE Purple & white striped Small long fruit abundantly produced on compact plants -good flavor, no bitterness, few seeds -excellent in containers
GOURDS small ornamental mix   High yield of various striped and solid - pear-shaped gourds in early fall.
WHEAT GRASS great in salads good for humans and cats A healthy and satisfying nibble treat for CATS also healthy for juicing additive

MELON EARLIQUEEN Early sweet EXTRA EARLY EASTERN TYPE medium sized round cantaloupe with sweet orange flesh.
MELON ASIAN - SUN JEWEL Early sweet 7"X3.5" are lemon yellow with white flesh that is crisp and sweet. Plants yield large numbers of fruit. INTERESTING VARIETY! Plants slip off the vine when ready

ONION SETS STUTTGARTER Plant in rows 2-3" apart in spring - produces small onions throughout summer and large onions by fall.
PEPPER BETTER BELL Green bell - 70 days Blocky, thick walled 3.5" X 4.5" glossy green fruits. An early high yielding variety that is disease and virus resistant.
PEPPER CARMEN Italian style - 60 - 80 days Italian-type pepper good for frying, roasting and salads. Early, delicious, beautiful and productive. Tapered fruits ripen from green to deep carmine. Maturity is early on these upright med sized plants
PEPPER CHERRY BOMB VERY HOT!! 62-87 days Early and productive round-shaped fruit that hang off of tall plants. 2-2.5" - good fresh or for pickling -VERY HOT!
PEPPER GOLDEN CALIF. WONDER Bell pepper 70 days Large nicely lobed fruit starts out bright gold and turns red at maturity.
PEPPER HOT PAPER LANTERN Bright red HHHOT!! 60-90 days Habanero type but larger and very hot! Tall plants put on a colorful display throughout the season as they start out bright lime green, through shades of orange and then scarlet red when they ripen. Wrinkled fruits.
PEPPER EARLY JALAPEŅO 60-80 days Traditional early strain 2-2.5 X 1" fruits mature early, dark green changing to red. Indispensable for Mexican cooking and great for stuffing as appetizers.
PEPPER PURPLE BEAUTY Bell - 78 days 4X3.5" blocky fruits have thick flesh and are highly productive. A truly purple pepper adds novelty to salads and cooking.
PEPPER RED BEAUTY Bell - 68 days Large sized, early and high yielding, this pepper turns quickly from from a green bell to red.
POTATOES YUKON GOLD approx 5# Yellow flesh - long storage - considered the best eating variety - use in any cooking style -great mashed potatoes. Plant potatoes in raised mounds with volcano hollows on top to catch the water. Cut into pieces with at least 1 eye each - plant 6-8" deep.
PUMPKIN SPIRIT 90 days Vine spreads controllably only 5 ft. - heavy producer of your typical orange pumpkin. Just right for carving!
PUMPKIN TINY Very small pumpkins each vine will yield 6-8 edible plants or for great decorations.
RHUBARB perennial plant - SUN An easy to grow perennial that produces for 10-12 years! Likes well drained soil and does well with a yearly composting. First year harvest only some stalks. Can be frozen.
SHALLOTS RED SUN   Divide into individual cloves - plant 3/4 dept of bulb on soil, about 6" apart in narrow rows. in early to mid spring. I ALWAYS GROW THESE AND LOVE THE SWEETMILD TASTE IN COOKING!
SQUASH - TABLE QUEEN ACORN -Winter squash Dark green An excellent keeper with sweet fresh taste. Cut in half, scoop out seed + butter + a touch of maple syrup or brown sugar - cover with wax paper microwave 10-15mins. mmmmm.
SQUASH - ZUCCHINI CASH FLOW OR SUNGREEN Dark green Smooth skinned, long slender zucchini. High yielding plants.
SQUASH - SUMMER YELLOW   Yellow waxy skinned fruit - nice mild taste
SQUASH - winter BUTTERNUT light orange-tan Good long keeper for the Fall winter season - orange flesh with a nutty flavor. Tastes great cubed, mashed and makes wonderful soup!
STRAWBERRIES EVERBEARING Ozark Mountain Produces heavy in spring - space out 10-12"

TOMATO JETSETTER - JETSTAR BEEF STEAK - large Heavy producer of large fruit -low acidity - has great flavor and disease resistant
TOMATO JULIET between a grape and a plum Profuse amount of sweet large elongated grape-shaped tomatoes. VERY disease resistant. Great in salads and for sauce as well. SALSA!!!
TOMATO LA ROMA PLUM Pear shaped 2 oz. fruit, for canning
TOMATO NEW GIRL BEEF STEAK - moderate size Replaces Early Girl, better tasting, disease resistant great tomatoes that holds up well on the vine. Our earliest yielder
TOMATO SUPERSONIC BEEF STEAK - very large Large beefsteak tomato with exceptional flavor - disease resistant.
TOMATO SUN CHERRY - SUPER SWEET CHERRY TOMATO High yielding tomato that should produce well over 100 tomatoes.
TOMATO HEIRLOOM VARIETY BRANDYWINE                   (limited quantity) TALL VINING One of the best tasting tomatoes from the Amish people. Large fruit w/ pink skinned flesh - rich, spicy flavor. Plants grow vigorously w/ long production.
TOMATO HEIRLOOM VARIETY CHEROKEE PURPLE           (limited quantity) TALL VINING Unusual color purpley dusky pink. Full flavor large tomatoes more than 100 years old.(probably from the Cherokee people)
TOMATO HEIRLOOM VARIETY GREEN ZEBRA                    (limited quantity) TALL VINING Delicate and tangy flavor great in salads - ripens when yellow blush develops
TOMATO HEIRLOOM VARIETY STRIPED GERMAN med-tall vines Medium to large bi-color red and yellow fruit. marbled interior looks beautiful sliced - complex fruity flavor and smooth texture.
