Kerns Nursery - list of Herbs 2009

This year we are again introducing some new and interesting varieties of herbs and vegetables.  All plants are acceptable to our Mountaintop growing conditions.  Though some are not winter hardy they have a seasonal production that gives worthwhile results. 
Here's an indexed list of
45 different herbs that we offer this year.  We also add a personal commentary on most of our herbs by Pat Kerns.
 

ARUGULA  (ROCKET) Erucca vesicaria Annual 8" (Plant succession crops) A loose spinach like green w/ a harsh bitter flavor that adds bite to a boring salad.  Plant successive crops - tender leaves best
BASIL LEMON Mrs. Burns Annual 18" Very bright green attractive plants and very flavorful.  Great in salads.
BASIL SWEET ITALIAN Ocimum basilicum Annual 24" (Plant succession crops) A versatile plant w/ many uses in cooking .  Plant when weather is warm enough. Dry or freeze - Pesto freezes well for winter use.
BASIL purple ruffle Ocimum basilicum variety Annual 18" Good for garnishes or as an ornamental plant.
BASIL red leaf Ocimum basilicum Rubrum Annual 18" High yielding flat purple leaves with great flavor.  Beautiful garnish as well.
BASIL genovese Ocimum basilicum (compact) Annual 16" Great flavor - more compact plant with smaller leaves than Italian large leaf - better for growing in containers.
BAY LEAF Laurus Nobilis tender perennial I keep my bay in the house over winter.  Use in soups and stew.  Lovely ornamental tree!
BORAGE Borago officinalis Annual 24" Large plants bear hundreds of blue star - edible flowers.  Mild cucumber flavor for salads.
SALAD  BURNET Sanguisorba minor Perennial - 18" Dry ordinary soil - a salad ingredient that adds a cucumber flavor.  Use when the leaves are young and tender
CATNIP  Nepeta cataria Perennial - 18" The catnip that cats LOVE!  Cats tend to like the dried better than the fresh.   May be slightly used by the resident CAT!
CHAMOMILE Matricaria chamomillaa Annual 18" Pick flowers for tea before seed ripens or will self seed and can become invasive - can be dried for soothing tea.
CHIVES Allium schoenoprasum Perennial - 12-15" Onion flavored edible leaves - plant in herb garden and lovely purple ball- flowers can be dried or garnish a salad.
CHIVES GARLIC Allium tuberosum Perennial - 12" As named , slight garlic flavor prevails.  Use as any chive. Excellent ornamental  - lovely form and white flowers in early Aug.
DILL Anethum gravelens Annual 30" - reseeds Many uses for cooking -leaves &/or seeds.  Potatoes, pickles, eggs, etc.  Chop leaves fine for fish.  Harvest seeds as soon as ripe.
DILL FERN LEAF Anethum gravelens var. Annual 15-20" - reseeds Same as regular dill, but more contained in it's growing habits.
ENGLISH THYME Thymus vulgarus tender perennial - 12" CULINARY- COMMON THYME:  needs well drained soil.  Use fresh or dry.  many culinary uses - my most used and favorite cooking herb!
FENNEL sweet florence Foeniculum vulgare Annual 30" Tall lacy green foliage w/ delicate anise flavor.  Use in soups, salads, stews and w/fish.
FRENCH SORREL Rumex scutatus Perennial - 18" Very lemony, tart , leaves.  Great soup!  A must for salad.   A leaf kids might enjoy chewing on.  Use tender leaves.
FRENCH TARRAGON Artemesia Dracunculus Perennial - 30" Use in French cooking - rice, chicken, vegetables.  Most flavorful fresh, but dry for winter use.  Béarnaise sauce and vinegar!
GERANIUMS scented Various Annual Tell variety by label.  Great ornamentally in potted arrangements or in gardens.  Use leaves in teas and in potpourri.
GREEK OREGANO Origanum Perennial - 18" Cut sprigs and hang in bunches to dry.  Use in pizza or tomato sauces and salads.  Greek has  more of a bite!
LAVENDER MUNSTEAD Lavendula augustifolia M. Perennial - 15" Requires sand in our soil to do well - trim to keep neat.  Plant as a ground cover for tons of flowers for drying. - many uses
LEEKS Allium porrum Perennial - 24" Space out these seed started leeks -the sweetest and mildest in the onion family. Many culinary uses
LEMON THYME Thymus citriodorus perennial - 4" Use with fish or rice. Pretty variegated leaf looks excellent ornamentally.
MARJORUM Origanum majorana tender perrenial 10" A loose bush with pungent aroma.  Stews, chicken, veggies, potatoes, lamb,  pork.  Hang in kitchen to dry &  use.
NASTURTIUM & VIOLAS various by label annual Nasturtiums & violas make great salad herbs.  Nasturtiums taste peppery - violas are just ornamental 
OREGANO (Greek) Origanum Perennial - 18" Cut sprigs and hang in bunches to dry .  Use in pizza or tomato sauces and salads.  Greek has  more of a bite!
PARSLEY CURLEY Petroselinum crispum Biennial - 8" Curley parsley is rich in vitamin C and helps freshen breath. The perfect garnish and cooking herb.  Beautiful border plant!
PARSLEY FLAT LEAF Petroselinum crisp. Neopolitanum Biennial - 8" Use as curly parsley.  Tends to  be the preferred parsley for flavor in cooking.  Use fresh or dry.
PEPPERMINT Mentha piperita Perennial - 18" A fast growing invasive plant.  Excellent for brewing hot or ice tea or as tea garnish.
RED LEAF BASIL Basil Rubrum Annual 18" A versatile plant w/ many uses in cooking .

ROSEMARY Rosmarinus officinalis tender perennial - 4" dry thoroughly before winter storage.  Use in stews, lamb, chicken.  Very Fragrant.  Bring indoors for winter -keep moist in sun
ROSEMARY IRENE Rosmarinus prostratus tender perennial A new prostrate rosemary-vigorous grower neat, attractive habit -clear blue flowers. Creeping  rosemary is used as the upright variety.  Makes a great hanging basket for those who want a container herb garden.
SAGE Salvia Officinalis Perennial - 36" Beautiful silvery sage is a staple in every herb garden.  Pungent leaves have many uses especially flavoring meats - lamb, chicken etc.  Saute leaves till crisp-serve with pasta
SAGE BERGGARTEN Salvia officinalis Berggarten Perennial - 20" Beautiful foliage with rounded silver leaves.  Lilac flowers.  Mildew resistant.  Use as common sage in cooking
SAGE GOLDEN Salvia officinalis Aurea Perennial - 15" Ornamental Sage with mild flavor - use as a lovely border plant or in flower boxes as foliage accent!!!
SAGE PURPLE  Salvia officinalis Purpurea Perennial - 15" Just a beautiful ornamental in herb, annual,  perennial garden or in planter boxes and pots.  Use with fall cabbages and Kales.
SAGE TRICOLOR Salvia officinalis Tricolor Perennial - 12" Just a beautiful ornamental in herb, annual,  perennial garden or in planter boxes and pots.  Use with fall cabbages and Kales.

SAVORY (summer) Satureja Hortensis Annual -18" A flavoring used for beans, lentils and peas. Use as a salt substitute.

WATERCRESS Nasturtium officinale annual low growing Must be grown in special wet conditions.  If you want plant in a barrel or deep ditch and flood.-flat rock will help stabilize plants
