The photo above
shows an area looking upward toward the road showing an
artificial stream bed, rock retainer walls and part of the
wooden platforms and steps that access the property.

We sub-contracted
a builder to implement our railing design appropriate to the look
of the house and environment of the area. Concolor Fir trees
were planted to screen the road from the house.

This photo
shows the parking area on top, by the road. It also shows how
we utilized the space underneath for a shed and firewood
storage. Using stone retainer walls we added levels to
the area that includes access paths and planting of evergreens
that will be appropriate when the house is used in the winter
months.

Note that
lighting was added to the final landscape design to aid in
illuminating the paths and steps.

This project presented two challenges: a house shaded by a forest
AND set on a steep hillside.
Kerns Nursery
solution:
1. Native field stone was laid by experienced
hands for a professional and natural appearance.
2. Evergreens and stone blend together to form a
natural look.

3.
The wall leads smoothly into the wooden step and platform
construction

4. A set of staircases, split into sections and
turned at angles, with landings, slate-edged platforms to provide
flat areas for planting, and a heavy use of ferns to blend with
the grown forest, provide all-year-green color and will
withstand heavy-duty snowfalls. We also built a utility shed
into the stair system.
For your new landscaping project, we will draw
on the wide
resources of the Kerns Nursery, and on a wide network of
suppliers. All plants we will use in your project will be
suited to the Catskills climate and soils.
